{"id":7297,"date":"2019-09-21T18:03:14","date_gmt":"2019-09-21T16:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pestofresco.eu\/the-santoreggia\/"},"modified":"2019-09-21T18:03:14","modified_gmt":"2019-09-21T16:03:14","slug":"the-santoreggia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pestofresco.eu\/en\/the-santoreggia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Santoreggia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In today&#8217;s news we talk about a plant, a beautiful, fragrant and virtuous aromatic herb that grows wild and is also cultivated in Liguria: the Santoreggia.<br \/>\nAlso known as &#8220;Pepper Herb,&#8221; it is widely used in cooking and has health benefits.<br \/>\nDiscover it with us!<\/h2>\n<p>Dear <strong>friends of Pesto Fresco<\/strong>, today we are talking about an aromatic that we really like: <strong>Santoreggia.<\/strong><br \/>\nSantoreggia is a herb <strong>native to the Mediterranean<\/strong> that is also cultivated in <strong>Liguria<\/strong> and is a good <strong>natural remedy<\/strong> for various ailments, as well as lending itself to <strong>various uses in the kitchen.<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the past it was attributed powerful <strong>aphrodisiac effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Santoreggia: the etymology of the name<\/h3>\n<p>The etymology of the name of Santoreggia is uncertain. It may derive from the Greek \u03c3\u03ac\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2, <strong>Satyr<\/strong>, the mythical creature of the woods, half man and half goat. In fact, &#8220;<strong>Satyrs&#8217; herb<\/strong>&#8221; was believed to be highly aphrodisiac. However, there are other currents of thought. One of these has it derived from &#8220;s\u00e9ro, s\u00e1tum&#8221; I sow, sown or from the Arabic &#8220;s&#8217;\u00e1tar&#8221; the name of many plants.<br \/>\nFor still others, the name would derive from the Latin <strong>saturejum<\/strong>, meaning &#8220;sauce,&#8221; &#8220;mixture,&#8221; or from the verb, also Latin, saturare, &#8220;to satiate.&#8221; In fact, the plant in English carries the name savoury, meaning tasty.     <\/p>\n<h3>Santoreggia: the characteristics<\/h3>\n<p>Santoreggia belongs to the <strong>Limbiaceae<\/strong> family and appears to be related to sage, thyme and lavender, all of which are aromatic plants also cultivated in our region of Liguria, especially in the <strong>Albenga<\/strong> (Savona) area.<br \/>\nIt has a slender stem with small pointed leaves and can reach a height of 40 cm.<br \/>\nThe small flowers are light-colored, white or pink tending to lilac. They are <strong>very fragrant<\/strong> and, fortunately for us, seem to be <strong>unpalatable to mosquitoes<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h3>Summer savory: an aid to our health<\/h3>\n<p>Consider that in ancient times, because of its reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac, its cultivation and harvesting was forbidden to monks.<br \/>\nToday, the recognized <strong>virtues<\/strong> of santoreggia are others.  <strong>Find out about them below!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Keeps insects away<\/strong>: santoreggia has an aroma that is pleasant to humans, but is annoying to insects and, for this reason, can be a good remedy against mosquitoes by placing a jar of it on the windowsill or balcony or growing it in the garden.<br \/>\nIt also provides relief against mosquito, bee or wasp bites themselves by rubbing some on the affected spot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mothproof:<\/strong> to protect your clothes, put a small bag of dried Santoreggia in your closet!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antibacterial and antiviral<\/strong>: useful for fighting seasonal ills, such as colds and flu-like conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anti-inflammatory<\/strong>: helps reduce major infections of the intestines, kidneys and lungs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antioxidant<\/strong>: combats the action of free radicals, representing an important form of prevention against heart problems and cancer diseases.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>lowers cholesterol<\/strong> and is excellent as a <strong>cardiotonic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Summer savory: use in cooking<\/h3>\n<p>The beautiful and fragrant Santoreggia is as <strong>useful for health<\/strong> as it <strong>is for flavoring our dishes in the kitchen.<\/strong><br \/>\nIt is used both <strong>fresh<\/strong> and <strong>dried<\/strong> and goes well with <strong>salads<\/strong>, <strong>cheeses<\/strong>, <strong>meats<\/strong> and is used in the preparation of <strong>sauces and gravies<\/strong>.    <\/p>\n<p>How do you guys use it?
